I want to use a M.2 NVMe x4 SSD in a PCI-Express x1 slot. x4 NVMe SSDs directly use PCIe bus protocol, and so can be directly plugged into a full-size PCIe slot using a simple passive adapter. But there are four data lines, so these passive adapters are virtually all x4 lane cards. By specification, all PCIe cards are backwards compatible with the lowest bandwidth x1 lane slots. If the x1 slot.Insert NVMe SSD into M.2 slot. 4. Screw in NVMe SSD to the motherboard’s standoff. Make sure the SSD is secured. Note: Your motherboard may differ. If I run Xubuntu from the live DVD the SSD doesn't appear in the list of PCI devices (lspci), whereas if I put it in an adaptor board then it's registered as a PCI device (appears as a SSD controller). I just wonder what magic the Windows install applies so that it can see it as a PCI device in the M.2 slot. I'm using a Ryzen 5 2400G and I'm beginning to wonder if processor pinout limitations. It said that even with an M.2 slot, a PCIe adapter (like the Asus Hyper M.2 X4 PCI-E Mini Adapter Card or Lycom DT-120) was needed to get the speed advantage of the NVMe because the M.2 on the 8900 uses SATA. The specs on the 8910 do not list an M.2 slot, but later on in that thread someone posted.
